Mahogany Youth Corporation

Mission

Mission Statement:

Our mission is to empower kids to expand their possibilities through fishing.  We strive to give youth an opportunity to develop skills and enhance their self esteem. Since 1994 we’ve delivered a program titled “Teach a Child to Fish” to teach youth sport fishing and safe boating. We teach the kids to fish and enjoy the outdoors while teaching life skills to stay off drugs, in school and out of gangs. We provide exceptional experiences for youth during afterschool, out of school and Saturday programs

HOW ARE WE DIFFERENT?

Fishing is the hook that we use to get the kids attention.

Since 1994 we have fished with 1000s of kids. We are well respected in the community and featured in the Miami Herald, and Miami Times newspapers. We have fished with the Miami Dolphins, The Miami Dade, Miami Gardens, Broward County Parks department and the Juvenile Justice Department plus many other organizations and schools. Our volunteers and staff are trained, certified and insured mentors who have a positive life changing impact on the children

Teach a Child to Fish” designed to teach inner-city youth sport fishing and safe boating. We teach the kids how to fish and enjoy the outdoors while teaching life skills with a stay off drugs message which is incorporated into everything we do. We recruit volunteers, and provide paid staff that is thoroughly trained, certified and insured. We provide in school, after-school, out of school and Saturday programs.  We are working with the Miami-Dade School district, Miami and Broward parks departments to reach inner-cities youth (ages 6-18) in Broward and Dade Counties. The kids have fun and learn valuable skills to succeed.

The founder, Robert O’Bryant was a drug counselor for 22 years. He worked with juvenile offenders in the prison system. He wanted to intervene in the kid’s life before they were in the system. There were many children that had never been fishing. It was a way to get the kids involved in a constructive pastime. Our kids that fished with us were staying out of trouble because they had a positive outlet for their energy.

2012 is going to be very exciting. We are adding several programs in Broward and Miami Dade.  If you would like to bring our program to your location we are setting up satellite sights across the country so go to our contact us page and submit your information so we can partner with you to have a Mahogany Youth chapter in your location. We are also expanding our program to offer more multi-day options for organizations to have us work with their youth. So if you are a school,  have a boy scout troop, non profit organization that works with youth ages 6-17, a church, or a club or organization please contact us so we can fish with your youth.

Our programs are expanding and you can be apart of it. Our volunteer base is growing at a steady pace. With this growth, we have been able to accomplish more, and have a larger impact upon our community. We welcome new volunteers with open arms. Please inquire today about how you can become a cherished part of the Mahogany Youth Corporation Family. Volunteer application.
