You Are Invited To Participate With
Mahogany Youth
You
have an opportunity to make a real difference. Support Mahogany Youth Corp.,
Inc. Your donation will help us to real our goal to introduce youth (ages
4-18) , to fishing activities, tournaments, and workshops throughout South
Florida. Think about how much fishing equipment you do not use that could be
used by these kids.
Additionally the youth have their own monthly clubhouse meeting. Senior
citizens in the community will occasionally volunteer to chaperone and to
fish during these exciting events. The workshops and classes are designed to
help build self-esteem through hands on training. The children develop
confidence as they participate and complete each task successfully.
You
can feel a sense of belonging by becoming a member of Mahogany Outdoors our
parent organization and also donating to Mahogany Youth Corporation, the
youth segment of the Mahogany Outdoor Fi shing Club. You can help us raise
the self esteem of these youth by helping to engage them in the sport of
fishing and introducing them to positive role models. Our youth counselor
coaches, as young as 9 years old, assist us in presenting fishing workshops
for after school programs. The older participants in our program are
encouraged to mentor or tutor four and five year old children thereby
raising the self esteem of both the teacher and the student.
The
fishing events are augmented by weekly rap sessions on topics such as anger,
fear, and responsible citizenship. Parent Training workshops for the parents
of participants are held
monthly. In addition to the director and youth
coaches we are assisted by Master Level volunteers from the Miami Chapter of
the National Association of Black Social Workers and Resolving Differences
Inc., a social service agency. It has been said that if you
give a man a fish you fed him for a day. Teach
a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. This allegory is certainly
true for children as well. More importantly children not only need physical
food, they need spiritual food as well. This is especially true for Miami
youth who are the focus. Everyone is welcome to participate and our programs
are open to all youth. Mahogany Youth gives them something they can be
successful at and provides positive role models for them to follow.
In
order for youngsters to grow up to be outstanding, productive, self
supporting young men and women they need to have positive interactions with
adults so they can experience and know that there are
grown ups who care
about them, who are nurturing and who are fun. That is where we come in to
help. We provide more than just fishing rods though that is the hook that
gets them involved. We take the kids to movies and involve them in our lives
to give them positive role models. The Mahogany Fishing club already has a core group of youth. We accept
members of every ethnic groups as these youngsters need to learn how to get
along with all people. Other than catching that big fish, the most exciting experience for a
fisherman is watching a kid catch his or her first fish. Teaching a child to
fish is the hook that the Mahogany Fishing Club will use to engage these
youngsters and build their self esteem.
We
have a select core group of young people we work
with in after school
programs. Other youngsters undoubtedly join us in some of our activities.
However, we will track the core group so we can determine the effectiveness
of our program. Assessments are administered at the beginning, mid and end
of the program with the assistance of Master degree social workers from the
Miami Chapter of the National Association of Black Social Workers and
Resolving Differences. Make a donation to Mahogany Youth The youth have monthly fishing events which include tournaments and fishing
clinics. Both fresh and saltwater events take place. Participants can win a
prize for the biggest fish and all will partake of hot dogs, hamburgers,
sodas and fellowship. Supervision is provided by adult volunteers from
Mahogany Fishing Club as well as our 3 youth counselors, older teenagers who
have fished with us for years and are very experienced and mature.
We started our fresh water events at Gwen Cherry Park
over 15 years ago; however, we
have and will also take our youth to the
Tamiami Trail and Lake Okeechobee.
Salt water trips include pier fishing at Dania Beach and Haulover Marina,
numerous bridges as well as trips on our 22 foot open fishermen boat,
commercial boats as well as 3 day trips to the Dry Tortugas located
approximately 60 miles south of Key West.
Meetings are held at least once a month enabling our young people to
participate in planning these trips. This helps them
develop a sense of
belonging as well as organizational skills. From past experiences we know
the youngsters will be hooked on the fishing aspect of this self esteem
building program. However to insure their success we hold monthly rap
session seminars in which we will discuss things such as dealing with
anger, fear, becoming a man or woman, responsible citizenship and other
important issues.
Videos are shown on social issues as well as on How to
catch a fish. Social workers from the aforementioned groups as well as our
director conduct the seminars. Points are given for attendance which can be
exchanged for prizes. Youth are also encouraged to write articles on their
fishing experiences for our monthly newspaper Mahogany Outdoors(see
appendix). This builds their writing skills as well as build self esteem.
